Localization of normal and abnormal function in patients with band heterotopia

چکیده
Cortical dysplasia is caused by the failure of migration and development of cortical neurons, resulting in misplacement of neurons or absence of cortical lamination. Band heterotopia (BH) is one of the syndromes involving cortical dysplasia, and is characterized by diffuse subcortical heterotopia with a band-like appearance. Recent advances in molecular biology have revealed that BH probably originates in a mutation of the doublecortin gene. However, the neurophysiological aspects of sensorimotor function and epileptogenesis are not clearly understood. Sensorimotor function and epileptic activities were examined in two patients with BH, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Different structures involved during ictal and interictal epileptic activity in malformations of cortical development: an EEG-fMRI study.
Malformations of cortical development (MCDs) are commonly complicated by intractable focal epilepsy. Epileptogenesis in these disorders is not well understood and may depend on the type of MCD. The cellular mechanisms involved in interictal and ictal events are notably different, and could be influenced independently by the type of pathology. We evaluated the relationship between interictal and...
متن کاملMalformations of the Cerebral Cortex as a Cause of Mental Retardation and Epilepsy: Anatomoclinical and Genetic Spectrum*
The malformations of the cerebral cortex represent a major cause of developmental disabilities, severe epilepsy and reproductive disadvantage. The advent of high resolution MRI techniques has facilitated the in vivo identification of a large group of cortical malformation phenotypes. Several malformation syndromes caused by abnormal cortical development have been recognized and specific causati...
متن کاملThe role of oral dipyridamole stress gated SPECT in assessing the response of the left ventricle to stress: Re-evaluation of an old method
Introduction: We aimed to assess whether the vasodilator effect of oral dipyridamole on the left ventricular systolic function in patients with suspected CAD is different from that of intravenous (IV) dipyridamole using Tc-99m MIBI myocardial perfusion gated SPECT. Methods: Eighty-nine patients (17 M / 72 W; 61 ± 10 years) were enrolled in this study. The patients underwent a dipyridamole stre...
متن کاملAdvanced structural multimodal imaging of a patient with subcortical band heterotopia
Subcortical band heterotopia (SBH) is a disorder of neuronal migration most commonly due to mutations of the Doublecortin (DCX) gene. A range of phenotypes is seen, with most patients having some degree of epilepsy and intellectual disability. Advanced diffusion and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences may be useful in identifying heterotopias and dysplasias of different sizes ...
متن کاملOcular Motor Function in Patients with Bilateral Vestibular Weakness
Introduction: Patients with bilateral weakness (BW) have many difficulties in gaze stability that interfere with their normal function. The aim of this study was to evaluate ocular motor functions in patients with BW to better understand the problem of gaze instability in these patients. Materials and Methods: Patients were referred from the Otolaryngology Department for Vestibular Assessmen...
